Messy play is one of the best ways to get children to learn and develop and is embraced by us here at Lauriston Nursery.
The first rule about messy play is that there is no right or wrong way to carry out messy play. It’s exactly as it sounds – play that is messy!
It is all about letting the children explore and experiment with different objects without any particular end result. We use many materials during messy play such as flour, pasta, playdough, paint, glue, along with natural resources such as leaves, twigs and cones.
The children are then free to make their own discoveries, developing their knowledge and understanding of different objects and stimulating their curiosity. Messy play can also encourage your child’s language skills as they describe how something feels, looks and sounds. It requires high levels of concentration and strengthens your child’s muscle control, develop fine motor skills and improve their hand-eye co-ordination.
